The Professional Paint Correction Process

Wash and Prep the Vehicle

The initial phase of the paint correction process we perform at our El Cajon, California detailing shop involves meticulously washing the vehicle’s exterior and decontaminating it in full. This is crucial for eliminating surface impurities such as dirt, dust, and grime that can interfere with the correction process or that obscure the defects that are present. Once the hand washing portion of detailing is complete, additional steps are often needed to tackle more stubborn, embedded contaminants. For this, we use a clay bar that effectively agitate and lift particles that are deeply ingrained in the paint, setting the stage for the subsequent steps in the paint correction process.

Inspecting the Painted Surfaces

Once your vehicle has been fully cleaned and is completely dry, CCA Detailing & Ceramic Coating | PPF thoroughly inspects the condition of your vehicle’s paintwork under well-lit conditions or by using handheld LED shop lights. This detailed scrutiny allows us to pinpoint specific imperfections such as swirl marks, scratches, and signs of oxidation that the naked eye under traditional lighting cannot easily see. The type of flaws identified during this phase will dictate the kind of correction methods that will be used or allow our team to suggest a deeper, more thorough correction effort. The more severe the imperfections, the more intense the correction techniques that are needed from us.

Cut, Buff, and Polish Your Clear Coat

In this crucial stage, the real work of paint correction gets underway to set a new standard of gloss and perfection on your vehicle. We use all types of specialized tools during the cutting, buffing, and polishing process, along with different grades of polish or compound to target and remove the identified imperfections appropriately. For minor issues like swirl marks, a less aggressive, lighter polish is typically sufficient and gentle buffing pads. However, for more serious defects like scratches, a heavier compound and more abrasive cutting may be necessary. The general rule of thumb is to begin with the mildest compound available and gradually escalate to more aggressive solutions as required to achieve the desired results. NOTE: Our team will measure paint thickness before this process to make sure we do not remove too much clear coat.

Finally, We Seal and Protect Your Finish

Once the paint has been meticulously corrected, the focus shifts to preserving that newfound luster. The final step in the paint correction process involves applying a protective layer to the vehicle's surface, which is traditionally an entry-level sealant unless you choose to upgrade to a ceramic coating or paint protection film. Whichever option is chosen, the primary aim is to lock in the freshly corrected finish or with regard to ceramic coating packages, to embellish the luster, depth, and color richness further without having to re-apply wax to your vehicle more frequently. Protection from a PPF as an option serves as a barrier against potential future degradation, ensuring the vehicle's exterior remains in pristine condition for a longer period of time.

Common Questions about Paint Polishing/Paint Correction

  • What is paint correction?

Paint correction is the removal of swirls and scratches in your vehicle’s paint. Paint correction is also referred to as paint polishing and paint buffing. Generally speaking they are all the same. They remove swirls and scratches from your vehicles paint and enhance the gloss and shine.

  • What is the difference between our gloss enhancement and paint correction?

Our paint polishing / gloss enhancement will typically only shine your vehicle’s paint. It won't remove any swirls and scratches from your vehicles paint. A paint correction will not only enhance the gloss and shine on your vehicle’s paint but it will also remove up to 99% of swirls and scratches depending on which paint correction package you choose.

  • Will paint correction remove all swirls and scratches?

With paint correction we can remove up to 99% of swirls and scratches. We never say 100% because there will always be some scratches that will be too deep to safely remove.

  • Is paint correction safe to do on my car?

Before we do any paint correction a on a client’s vehicle we perform a full inspection of the paint as well as use a special gauge that can actually measure your paint thickness. We do this to make sure we are not potentially doing more harm than good to your vehicle. Having good knowledge, proper tools and equipment can make the paint correction process safe.

  • What is the difference between paint correction, paint buffing, and paint polishing?

Generally they all mean the same. From detailer to detailer they can mean different things depending on how much polishing they are doing and what tools they are using. It’s important to ask each detailer what that service includes and what exactly they will be doing to the paint as well as what the price is for that service.

  • How often does my car need a paint correction?

This will vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on how the vehicle is being cared for mostly. On vehicles that are properly being cared for typically once every 3-5 years it will need some level of polishing /paint correction.

  • Is paint correction worth it?

Yes absolutely! If you want to restore that brand new car shine back to your vehicle a paint correction is defiantly worth it! Once a paint correction is done we typically recommend and suggest having your vehicle ceramic coated to not only help keep your vehicle looking like that but it will also make washing easy due to the amazing hydrophobic properties of the ceramic coating. We offer our clients paint correction and ceramic coating packages as well. Be sure to check out our ceramic coating packages on our website. You can also call, text or e-mail us for more information.

  • Do brand new cars need paint correction?

It really depends. We have worked on countless amounts of brand new cars over the years that have paint flaws and defects that need sorting out. To the untrained eye and to most people it looks like a perfect brand new vehicle.

If you would like a FREE inspection of your brand new car feel free to call, text , or e-mail us to book a free inspection.

  • Can I do paint correction myself?

Yes you can. However, an unexperienced person without proper training, knowledge, skills, and equipment can damage the paint on the vehicle that can cost thousands to fix. Here at Cruising California Auto Detailing and Ceramic Coating we specialize in paint correction and ceramic coatings. We use a wide variety of speciality tools ranging from paint thickness gauges for inspection to different size polishers to accommodate the different and complex panels will be working on.
